The Story of My Life

was born as an "empty nest" child, the 3rd and last of 3 daughters.  My father was the garage superintendent for Kroger's Midwest region and my mother was a full time stay at home mom. We moved to St. Louis Missouri when I was just four years old. I grew up and spent most of my life there until 4 years ago when my husbands work took us off to Nashville TN. My parents, who are now getting into their twilight years, are very dear to me and I try to spend as much time as I can with them. I love them tremendously and they are a major part of my life. After a mostly unremarkable childhood, I graduated from Lutheran North high school in 1983 and then went on to Nursing School at Missouri Baptist.

I graduated and passed my State Board exams in 1986, to become a Registered Nurse. However, I discovered during the course of my education that I had no real love for the profession and thus decided to bypass a nursing career in favor of marriage.

I got married the first time in June of 1986 and spent the next 14 years as a housewife (no kids) and then found myself facing an unwanted divorce with no career skills to speak of. I then took a job in customer support for a medical computer company and it was while working at this job that I fell in love with one of my co-workers (my current husband).  After a year and a half of romance we tied the knot and decided to start a family together. After 9 years together we have grown apart and our lives seem to be taking us in different directions. The last few years has been a struggle and we even separated for a short time but in the interest of the kids, we have decided to try and stay together even though we really don't love each other anymore.

It's really not as bad as it sounds. He travels about 30% of the time and due to my short term memory disorder I rarely remember things said or done from day to day outside the very vaguest of details. It's a sorta like that movie "50 First Dates". When my memory began to fail 6 years ago, I thought it was a terrible thing but now I view it as a blessing in disguise!

I also now have a wonderful son named Logan and a beautiful daughter named Teagan.  They keep me busy all day as I am now a devoted full-time mom. Logan is a bit of an oddball. At age 2 he began receiving specialized therapy to help him with communication and socialization problems. He did a lot of echolalia, stream of consciousness babbling and did not grasp the concept of two-way communication. He clung to rituals and routines with extreme rigidity and obsessively stacked and arranged objects in intricate patterns. When he was almost 4 yrs old, he had a seizure and was diagnosed with epilepsy. After beginning Keppra for seizure control his behavior began to dramatically normalize.  Now he has almost completed First Grade and is active in Tiger Cub Scouts and Tae Kwon Do as well.  And although he's still a bit obsessive about routines, he is extremely detailed oriented and eager to learn. His sister Teagan is overly social and is now enjoying Kindergarten. She has been learning very quickly to read and write. She loves to sing and to be the absolute center of attention. She has a great deal of trouble with paying attention and being quiet. She is forever getting in trouble with her teachers and instructors. I suspect she may have ADHD but we haven't taken any measures yet hoping perhaps that she will outgrow this. The kids are just 11 months apart in age and fight constantly. Teagan is active in Daisy Girl Scouts and Tae Kwon Do as well.

I also have a cat named Shadeaux who is just a tad psychotic. He is the most recent addition to a long line of pets that I have loved and cared for over the years. I have always had a great love and respect for nature and animals (I started at a very young age) which is why I have had so many pets over the years including pygmy opossums, Egyptian spiny mice, snakes, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, gerbils, degus and many more. I spent almost 6 years as a volunteer doing wildlife rehab for injured and orphaned wildlife at a rescue and rehab facility in the St. Louis Mo area. Click here to see some of the photos I have taken of animals at the center. I specialize in the care of the North American Opossum, which is my favorite animal.

If I had to describe myself to others I would say that I am a fairly playful and quick witted woman who has an offbeat sense of humor. I am also very literate and enjoy stimulating conversation on a variety of subjects. I have a strong interest in metaphysics and the paranormal. I tend to be reserved with strangers but usually let loose with friends. Those who choose to get to know me often discover a very different person than the one they expected. You just have to be patient with me. Good things come to those who wait. When I am not being "Mom" to my two small children, I am a second degree initiate with Circle of the Hallowed Moon (an eclectic pagan group in Nashville TN) and Co-Administrator for National Paranormal Research Nashville, a local group of paranormal investigators. Who ya gonna call?!

Some of my interests and hobbies include computers, movies and TV (specifically Science Fiction), wildlife, witchcraft and paganism, cryptozoology, ufology and paranormal research. I know, I know.. I'm one of "those" (LOL). My musical tastes include "total dreck" (as my husband refers to it) - this is top 40 pop music and 80's music. I am also a big fan of the groups Nightwish and Evanescence. My favorite Nightwish songs are Ever Dream and She is My Sin.

My television tastes include most Sci-Fi shows such as the Star Trek series, Battlestar Galactica, Supernatural, Reaper, Ghost Whisperer and Paranormal Reality shows like Ghost Hunters, Destination Truth, UFO Hunters, MonsterQuest, Paranormal State, A Haunting etc..  I also enjoy the USA original series "Pysch" and "Monk" (mostly because it reminds me of my son Logan).

I am a voracious reader of Paranormal Romance and Erotica. My favorite authors and series in order of preference include:

My computer interests include web design and ecommerce. My introduction to computers came right after I got married to my first husband. He is an amazing computer programmer and so I naturally developed an interest in computers as well. Computer Bulletin Boards (aka BBSes) were a natural progression for me during the late 1980's when BBSing was reaching it's pinnacle. I was a housewife and had little opportunity for interaction with other people outside the home. BBSing became for me a very good way to meet people online and talk as the "internet" or "world wide web" didn't yet exist in an easily accessible manner in those days.

One of the first things I needed in the BBS hobby was a computer screen-name or alias to protect my real identity. Even before the 'net' happened - you still had to be careful who you gave information to, so we did not use our real names. Even back then psychos, weirdoes, and malicious hackers lurked the cyberspace as they still do today. Only the SysOps (system operators) of the BBSes knew who everyone "really" was. Other users knew you only by your handle or screen-name. For many years I was known in the local cyber community as "Fire Escape" which was followed by "SugarBane" during my Low Carb years (hence my domain name). Now I am called "Tanis". Tanis, is the Greek form of Tanith - derived from Semitic roots meaning "serpent lady". This was the name of the Phoenician goddess of love, fertility, the moon and the stars. Serpents have of old been associated with wisdom, secret knowledge, magic and rebirth. I was born during the year of the Snake according to the Chinese Zodiac and Tanis has a numerical value of 6 which is my Life Path or Destiny Number according to Numerology.

Although I am no longer active in the BBS community my old BBS, Fire Escape, is still online. It is kindly still hosted by my ex-husband. It is available dial-up at 314-588-0780 or via the internet at http://www.fehq.org. My Low Carb site is also still online at http://lowcarb4life.sugarbane.com. My pagan site is available at http://blessedbe.sugarbane.com.

Well, that's me in a nutshell folks. My story, my family, my hobbies, and my interests.  Hope it was enlightening for you and if you have any questions, please feel free to E-mail me anytime or Sign my Guestbook. Don't be afraid to say hi!
